In humid, shaded backyard areas, green algae and black mold can rapidly coat privacy fencing. Left unchecked on wood fencing, moss roots bore into surface wood cells, holding moisture against the grain and accelerating wet rot.
Oxygen Bleach vs. Harsh Chlorine Bleach
Never use harsh chlorine pool bleach (sodium hypochlorite) on natural wood fences. Chlorine bleaches the natural cellulose lignin fibers, turning wood an unnatural chalky white and killing surrounding lawn grass. Instead, use sodium percarbonate (oxygen bleach), which breaks down into oxygen and water while safely eradicating fungal spores.
