Oil-Based vs. Water-Based Fence Stain: Penetration, Longevity & Recoating

Applying a high-quality protective stain is the single most effective way to double the lifespan of an exterior wood fence. However, choosing between penetrating oil-based stains and water-based acrylic stains can be confusing.

Why Contractors Prefer Penetrating Oil-Based Stains

Oil-based stains (utilizing linseed or paraffin oils) soak deep into the cellular structure of dry wood. They do not form a plastic-like film on the surface. When they eventually fade after 3 to 5 years, they fade evenly without peeling or flaking, allowing you to re-stain without sanding or stripping.
